Of the 50 states, Utah has one of the largest concentrations of computer software firms; one of the four larger concentrations of biomedical firms; the youngest population; one of the highest birth rates; the second lowest death rate; the healthiest population; the highest literacy rate; the highest percentage of high school graduates; and the highest number of people with a college education.
Salt Lake City is the capital and largest city of Utah, with a metropolitan population of 1,333,914. Snow-capped mountains provide a beautiful natural setting for this center of culture, industry, commerce, and transportation. The city lies in the vast, high desert Salt Lake Valley at the foot of the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. It is about 15 miles southeast of Great Salt Lake. In 2002, Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympic Games.
The city occupies 75 square miles and is the county seat of Salt Lake County. Salt Lake City and Ogden form the center of a metropolitan area that covers Davis, Salt Lake, and Weber counties. About two-thirds of Utah's people live in this area.
Salt Lake City is the world headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose members are known as Mormons. Mormon pioneers, led by Brigham Young, founded Salt Lake City in 1847. Young said when he saw the scenic land, "This is the right place."
Mormons make up about half of the city's population. About 90 percent of the city's people were born in the United States. People of English, German, and Mexican ancestry form the largest groups in the city.
Climate: Though by no means mild, it is modified by the surrounding mountains that deflect stormy weather elsewhere. There are four well-defined seasons, including a long winter. Summers are hot, but the dry air lessons felt hear, and nights are cool. Winters are cold but not severe. Most of the precipitation is snow, with accumulations staying on the ground for most of the winter. Fall is short, spring is longer and sometimes stormy. Frosts arrive by mid-October and depart by the beginning of May.
Business: The Salt Lake City metropolitan area has about 700 manufacturing plants. Its leading industries make aircraft parts, chemicals, computer software, electronics, food products, and metal products. A number of petroleum refineries are also in the area. Two Fortune 500 companies, American Stores and Autoliv, and headquartered here. State and federal government agencies rank among the chief employers in the city. Salt Lake City also ranks as an important banking center.
Transportation: Salt Lake International Airport is closer to the heart of the city it serves than nearly any other U.S. airport. As the "Crossroads of the West" at least half of Americas population is located within a 2= hour flight from Salt Lake City. In the 1990's, the rebuilding of interstate highways and the completion of a light rail system improved the transportation in the area. Average daily commute is 42 minutes. Provides AMTRAK service to Chicago and Oakland.

Education: 98 percent of Salt Lake City's children attend public schools. Salt Lake Community College, the University of Utah, and Westminster College are in the city.
Culture:. The city is the home of Eccles Community Arts Center, the Museum of Church History & Art, Kinsbury Hall, Ballet West, the Pioneer Theatre, the Utah Opera Company, the Utah Symphony Orchestra, the Hansen Planetarium, the Hogle Zoo, the Salt Lake Art Center, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and the Utah Museum of Natural History.
Recreation: Nine major ski resorts, three cross country ski areas and the nations only recreational ski jumping complex are less than an hours drive from downtown. Eleven national parks are less than a days drive from Salt Lake City. Five of those are located in Utah.
Housing Market: In 2001, a typical three-bedroom home went for $156,080, while a four-bedroom home sold for $210,794. Condominiums were sold at an average price of $125,932. While the average home was 60 days on the market, most sold in 30 days or less. The vast majority of buyers financed their home with conventional loans.
